Contemporary Contemplations # 4 at PHK18 / Convex architects. Three times CON-. When I was asked to make a mural for this exhibition this remarkable fact was the starting point I wanted to work with.

I searched for words or phrases that start with these 3 letters. The title of the mural is Conversation Piece. What does this expression mean? Usually it refers to a remarkable object that gives rise to a conversation.

In the 17th century something else was meant with a 'conversation piece'. In painting it is a genre in which the people portrayed are in conversation with each other. Homely scenes from cheerful groups.

In the Netherlands this genre has evolved: Frans Hals has painted many 'chat pieces' and Rembrandt's night watch is another famous example. But the Conversation Piece genre is derived from an older term, the sacra conversazione, a form of composition in which the Madonna and Child are placed in the company of two or more saints and seem to talk to them. In the Italian Renaissance, Masaccio, Piero della Francesca and Fra Angelico paint many religious group portraits. The imagination of inner, metaphysical conversations is a fascinating notion. The lips of the figures do not move; the silence and calm is what appeals to me in this.

For this design I omitted 'sacra' and only used ‘conversazione’. Stripped out of the sacred, canteen talks are of a different order. You can make small talk here, although contemplative conversations are certainly not excluded.

Contemporary Contemplations #4 bij PHK18 / Convexarchitecten. Driemaal CON. Toen mij werd gevraagd om bij deze tentoonstelling een muurschildering te maken, vond ik dat een opvallend gegeven waarmee ik aan de slag wilde. De wandschildering wil ik aanbrengen op de ‘kantine-muur’.

Ik zocht naar woorden of uitdrukkingen die met deze 3 letters beginnen. De titel van de muurschildering is Conversation Piece. Wat betekent deze uitdrukking? Doorgaans wordt er een opmerkelijk object bedoeld dat aanleiding geeft voor een gesprek.

In de 17e eeuw werd er iets anders bedoeld met een ‘conversatiestuk’. In de schilderkunst is het een genre is waarop de geportretteerden met elkaar in gesprek zijn of zich anderszins met elkaar onderhouden. Huiselijke taferelen van vrolijke gezelschappen.

In Nederland heeft dit genre zich ver ontwikkeld: Frans Hals heeft vele ‘babbelstukken’ geschilderd en De nachtwacht van Rembrandt is een ander beroemd voorbeeld. Maar het genre Conversation Piece is ontleend aan een oudere term, de sacra conversazione, een compositievorm waarin de Madonna met kind in het gezelschap van twee of meer heiligen is geplaatst en met hen lijkt te praten. In de Italiaanse Renaissance schilderen onder andere Masaccio, Piero della Francesca en Fra Angelico vele religieuze groepsportretten. Het verbeelden van innerlijke, metafysische gesprekken vind ik eenfascinerende notie. De lippen van de figuren bewegen niet; de stilte en kalmte is wat me daarin aanspreekt.

Voor dit ontwerp heb ik ‘sacra’ weggelaten en alleen ‘conversazione’ gebruikt. Ontdaan van het sacrale zijn kantine gesprekken toch van een andere orde. Hier mag je het hebben over koetjes en kalfjes, maar contemplatieve gesprekken zijn zeker niet uitgesloten.
