GRID paintings: UAU/YOE/TOE/OUO/HOOH
UAU / 160 X 180 cm / acrylic on canvas / 2006 / installation view in Groothandelsgebouw ‘Chaos en orde’ 2006, at Rijnstate Hospital and in the studio in Amsterdam (photo Alexandra Rouppe van der Voort) / HOOH, OUO, TUUT, 18 x 24 cm (each)
UAU (2006) kind of looks like a totem pole, by which the vowels are balancing on each side. It's like having a long nose to the world of commerce and advertising selling hot air. Almost all of the paintings in the series have a metropolitan atmosphere of heavy traffic and pedestrian bustle, a jumble of noises in which words dissolve into cacophony.
