Wat kun je zeggen met vier letters? Van 1-3 februari presenteer ik in BOUWPUT, projectruimte van Broedplaats BOUW, woordbeelden uit het project CUMA KATA-KATA/HEEL KORT HEEL EVEN/HEEL HIER.
Gefascineerd door het heel gewone fenomeen van vierletterwoorden ben ik in 2017 begonnen met het uitwerken van deze beknopte woorden tot woordbeeldseries. De vierletterwoorden symboliseren snel, compact, efficiënt en standaard, passend bij deze tijd. Vanaf 2022 legde het project de nadruk op de talen waarmee ik ben opgegroeid. Door taal en betekenis te verkennen in combinatie met beeld en geluid, verbind ik me zowel met migratie en het gevoel erbij te horen - maar ook met hedendaagse abstracte kunst en de traditie van de schilderkunst, mijn achtergrond als beeldend kunstenaar. In principe benader ik lettervormen als vormen en tekens, geplaatst op een oppervlak met een voor- en achtergrond.
In Bouwput wordt het werk gepresenteerd als giclée prints, op posters en op beeldschermen; elk oppervlak heeft zijn eigen tactiliteit. Een selectie is gepubliceerd in BUKU-BOEK-BOOK en werd eerder uitgebracht in oktober 2023 in Huis de Pinto, Amsterdam met een artist talk met Alex de Vries. Deze drietalige publicatie van uitgeverij De Zwaluw in Den Haag is tijdens de presentatie verkrijgbaar.

What can you say with four letters? From February 1-3 BOUWPUT Project Space I’m presenting word images from the project CUMA KATA-KATA/HEEL KORT HEEL EVEN/HEAR HERE.
Fascinated by the very ordinary phenomenon of four letter words, I started elaborating on these succinct words into word image series in 2017. The four-letter words symbolize fast, compact, efficient and standard, matching today's times. From 2022 the project emphasized the languages I grew up with. Exploring language and meaning in conjunction with image and sound, I connect both to migration and a sense of belonging - but also to contemporary abstract art and the tradition of painting, my background as a visual artist. Basically I approach letter forms as shapes and signs, placed on a surface with a for- and background.
In Bouwput the work will be presented as giclée prints, on posters and on screen; each surface present different qualities of tactility.
A selection is published in BUKU-BOEK-BOOK and was previously released in October 2023 in Huis de Pinto, Amsterdam with an artist talk with Alex de Vries. This trilingual publication from publishing house De Zwaluw in The Hague will be available during the presentation.
