LIKE/LEUK, from the FIVE FOUR, MORE LESS series / GDMW, OMSTAND Arnhem

LIKE 2021 / 64 x 64 x 2 cm / print on plexiglass

For me, LIKE is intrinsically linked to Facebook. So is LEUK in Dutch. It's meant to be affirmative; but there's no room for nuance, such as ' a little like' - a little like. I don't like the word LIKE; while I find LEUK slightly less problematic. I am ambiguous about the significance. Visually, the four capitals have angular and sharp horizontal and vertical lines; I have marked the residual area with diagonal lines. Although the sound is inviting, as if with two arms you want to claim or pull something in for yourself, all the linear strokes repel. LIKE and LEUK are typical cliché words. In a personal conversation, you can't get away with these words; you continue to ask why something is liked. If the person can't explain it, they represent a superficial view of things.

Or would that be true of most four-letter words?

> LIKE is part of GEEN DADEN MAAR WOORDEN exhibition at Omstand, exhibition space for contemporary art, Arnhem - show runs till July 18 > Artist Talk at Finissage on Sunday 18th. Welcome!

I’m very excited about this exhibition about the use of words in the visual arts. Language is the connecting factor between the artworks in which words are manipulated, visualized or made audible in a variety of ways.

For this exhibition, I used several words from the collection of four-letter words beginning with the letter L. I now focus more on the centerpiece and keep a square format. Additionally, I‘m experimenting with printing on plexiglass. The clarity and sheen of the plastic material suits the through simplification that the words want to convey. Twelve images on plexiglass are installed in the show, forming a dialogue with the 4 letter words by Gerard Koek.

When requested to design for a specific location, I often offer the blueprint or studies for sale as inkjet prints. Sometimes an exhibition space has little budget and selling prints is a welcome addition to my design budget.
About these prints: they’re are also called piezography or giclée and are printed on archival fine art paper and the ink is fade resistant. Now I've put together a page on which the prints can be seen. Please contact me for information and to order.

WHERE I AM NOW - PRELUDE - October 26 - December 31, 2020 Huis de Pinto

The title 'Where I am now' is taken from the book of the same name by Jhumpa Lahiri. A quote from the book can be found on the wall of the reading room of Huis de Pinto, as a prelude to this project.

In the past weeks I have had six interesting conversations with volunteers who are deeply committed to this cultural literary center. Text fragments distilled from these talks will be added to the wall installation in the final phase. Starting point for these conversations is a question from the book: is there a place we are not passing through? This question intrigued me because the answer shows a vital connection between language, place and personal history.

About the show (NL )

About the show (EN)

Jaap van den Ende: Theme, method and freedom of choice are the starting point for the exhibition! At first sight a rather broad starting point. Isn't it true that every artist has his or her own themes, his or her own way of working and the freedom to make many choices? It goes without saying that an artist can completely surrender himself to the imagination and follow unknown paths. The artists in this exhibition seem to do just that to a lesser extent by choosing to work from the same subject, a basic drawing that is virtually identical in every painting, or by choosing a methodical or systematic way of working. On the contrary, this restriction increases and stimulates the ingenuity in designing. Always having the same subject seems annoying. Systems look sterile and impersonal, forgetting for the sake of convenience that systems and methods are not existing data. A system is conceived and developed. Systems and methods are creations that arise in the mind of the creator and they are essentially a form of imagination. ‘

The above starting point was for Jaap van den Ende the motivation to ask 11 visual artists for a group exhibition and a publication in which their work is briefly described. The special thing about his choice is that he searched for duos in which he allows the works of two artists to reflect. These pairs form unique combinations that can only be seen in collections of collectors or museums. The whole of the 6 pairs is an interesting study of the methods, themes and freedom of choice that these artists have made their own.

You are most welcome,
Marja and Jan-Willem Groenendaal

WHERE I AM NOW (A Conversation Piece) November 1, 2020 -May 1, 2021 (extended) Huis de Pinto

Amsterdam - For the reading room of Huis de Pinto, I’ll be making a text image on the wall that will grow over the course of the weeks. The texts are excerpts from conversations I’ll collect with people who have a warm heart for Huis de Pinto. The basis for the conversation is a quote from the book Dove mi trovo (Where I am now) by Jhumpa Lahiri.

A question in the book intrigues me : is there a place we are not passing through? It formulates a connection between language, place and personal history. Is the HdP a sheltered place where you are not passing through and make contact with others? And at present another relevant question is: what does an HdP mean as a meeting place in Corona time?

Quote: ... Is there a place where we are not in transit? Disoriented, perplexed, confused, lost, stunned, dazed, defeated, bewildered, lost: I feel at home in that family of terms. So that is my place, the words that bring me into the world.

Collaboration with Marjorie Welish, artist/critic (NY/US) 2021

Project X (working title) is a collaboration with painter and art critic Marjorie Welish and myself. We met in Paris in 2012, when I was introduced to her by Olivier Gourvil. She encouraged me to apply for a residency at ISCP and I did. During my residency in 2017 we visited each other’s studios, not knowing one day we would start a project together.
More news on our collaboration project soon.

Finissage Sunday February 9 / 15.00 - 17.00 hrs / De Vishal, Haarlem. Welcome!

Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?’
‘That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,’ said the Cat.
‘I don’t much care where -‘ said Alice.
‘Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,’ said the Cat.
‘- so long as I get somewhere,’ Alice added as an explanation.
‘Oh, you’re sure to do that,’ said the Cat, ‘if you only walk long enough.’

Alice’s Question
For this cabinet I’ve used this quote from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Caroll (1886) the Dutch translation. The installation makes a connection with the exhibition "Camino del Deseo" that can be seen in the Great Hall; compiler is Irene van de Mheen. The Kleine Zaal De Vishal can be seen 24/7 from the square.
Many thanks to curator CP Leinenbach.

De vraag (van Alice)

Last chance to see DNA IKEA at Cacaofabriek, Helmond - November 17 2019 - January 19 2020

DNA IKEA is a follow-up to the Billy Combinations exhibition in Hoofddorp and Berlin (2010, 2018).
Ikea once started to make affordable and accessible for everyone from the ideal design furniture. That "democratic" design is simple, but sophisticated in design and now recognizable as part of countless interiors. You could say that such furniture forms the backdrop to today's life. Equality is a wonderful ideal, but uniformity is intolerable. I’ll be showing ‘IKEA is a Four Letter word’ (2018).

This project is based on a concept by Guda Koster and Frans van Tartwijk. Thank you!

De Cacaofabriek is the cultural centre of Helmond. On view till January 19, 2020. De Cacaofabriek
Open daily 13.00 - 17.00 hrs

The Fall Benefit has become an ever more successful event each year to generate support for ISCP.
I donated a MISS - white - green print, from the Five Four, More Less series for this auction on Artsy.

During my residency at ISCP in 2017, I worked on the series which was based on a selection of words in English consisting of four letters. I referenced Robert Indiana’s artwork LOVE, in which the four letters comprising the word are stacked in units of two to form a square. Approaching letters as abstract motifs and signs, that is to say the meaning of the word is secondary - while the interplay between the shapes and the background, between positive and negative space, is crucial. The images are composed of broader colored planes as well as lines of different thickness.

Commissioned work, summer 2019

Update: view works on new page ‘Commissioned work’

This summer I worked on a number of commissioned paintings in my studio. This painting is a nine-letter word and now hangs in an apartment in Jakarta. In addition, I am now busy finishing a series of three paintings 'SISTERS', which will be sent to Toronto soon.
